Many of the great marketing opportunities that come your way may not be so great. I was a consultant for one of the top publishing houses in the U.S. The power of brand working for you was a great thing and the company was indeed powerful. The problem was the company had many different print products (nationally known), many of the products having below average return for the investment.


When it boiled down to the bottom line, the bottom line was based on the company's sales volume and not the return for the client. A product push, a one size fit all answer. Not matching the business's potential customers to the marketing vehicles demographics. The consultants were pushing thousands of businesses and their advertising dollars into products that would not work. The consultants where pushing the products that the company was telling them to push, to keep the product alive. This happens to all companies that sell their own marketing or advertising products. These are the issues I saw again and again which prompted me to start my own marketing firm.

Don't be that person that consultants or sales people take advantage of by relying on just their word. Work with an independent consultant, marketing agency or take the time to do the research yourself.

Great marketing opportunities are out there, you simply need to take the time to find them. Don't feel awkward to ask for references. Take the time to call on references and ask about the experience they had working with the company, product performance and the rate of return. Also choose a creative marketing message and a strong call to action on all of your advertising, whether it is print, broadcast, radio or web. As the saying goes, "work smart, not hard" and I hope this helps you make smarter marketing decisions.
